MyTunes Monday: Seven Devils

Between laziness, illness, and forgetfulness, I've managed to not do this feature in about a month. Oopsie. So, I thought I'd come back with a truly awesome song.

Weekend Update: A Long Recovery

I pretty much got my ass kicked last weekend. in 4 days, I worked 7 of 8 shifts (someone asked me to pick up an eighth shift, my response included the phrase FUCK NO, caps and all). 2 of those days were 12 hours long, one of which I got no break, the other I had 20 minutes. On the plus side, there's a little overtime in there and I made a lot of money. The down side was that I was exhausted. I slept in on Monday until 11am, though I didn't get out of bed for another hour. That hasn't happened in weeks if not months. I did pretty much nothing that day except some writing. Definitely nothing requiring physical exertion. It was just a really (and deservedly) lazy day (hence no MyTunes, I didn't even think about that until late in the day). I should have asked off on Tuesday also. Unfortunately, I didn't foresee exactly how tired I would end up being. I'm still not full recovered, even though it's several days later. What I really need is a holiday and a road trip.

Luckily, all I plan o doing for the rest of the day is some writing.

How To Be a Manly Man

King of the Hardwood 2012

This year's competition just wrapped up and yet again, the championship match was tight. When I say tight, I'm talking about a match that was 50.4% to 49.6%. It came down to last year's champion Eric Decker (who plays American football with the Denver Broncos) and Jacob "Jake" Dalton (an American gymnast). Personally I voted for Eric Decker (of whom I have many pictures on this blog, just search the football tag at the bottom). However, Dalton took the championship. I'm definitely not complaining though. A big congratulations to Jake.

If you want to see how the rest of the tournament shook out, you can find the website HERE.

"Words Are Wind"

At some point since I last wrote about books, I finished A Feast For Crows and I'm currently a third of the way through A Dance With Dragons (volumes 4 and 5 of A Song of Ice & Fire respectively). These books are a bit different than the first three volumes of the series. First, as the first three volumes were linear from one to the next, four and five take place at the same time, both picking up where volume three ended. Each book follows a different set of characters (but they come back together towards the end of book 5). According to the author, it was supposed to be one book but it got so long that he had to break it up. Second, there are a lot of new characters being followed and new places we see. Those differences took a little getting used to, especially since I didn't see maps of some of the places until I bought book five.

All of that said, I'm still enjoying the series a lot. Lots of twists and turns, unexpected people popping up. Some people we thought were dead end up alive. New deceptions, new plans. Great drama. If the show lasts long enough to get to this point (and I hope it does, I have no idea how they will address the timeline issue.

This was a quick post as I just took a little reading break. Now, back to my book.

P.S. When I bought A Dance With Dragons a few weeks ago, I also bought a book that had a compilation of Thomas Paine's works including Rights of Man and Common Sense. If you've never heard of Common Sense, it was an instrumental document that helped to drive colonial public opinion towards independence in the 1770's. It SHOULD be required reading in American schools.

Weekend Update: Wounds & Wine (Part 2)

After working Saturday morning, I went to Fork & Cork which is this wine festival (the one I mentioned in the last post). The day started out cool and cloudy, but ended up sunny and verging on hot (making that sweater not such a great idea), but beautiful. I actually didn't drink that much wine but hung out with some people that I hadn't seen in ages, not including the night before. I took some pictures of the event (unfortunately I didn't get in any of them).

I couldn't believe so many people brought their kids to a wine festival. That just seems like bad parenting.

After the festival, a bunch of us headed over to a friend's place. We hung out there for the rest of the evening and made some awesome food. Steaks, venison, potatoes & onions. It had literally been years since I have had venison (which had been "brought down" by one of the guys who was with us). Delicious! And I ate way too many potatoes.

Some of us went downtown, but I didn't stay out for long, especially since I had to work the next morning. It was a long, active, sleep-deprived weekend, but well worth it since I don't get weekends like this very often.

Weekend Update: Wounds & Wine (Part 1)

Small, but it stings.
Some time after I woke up on Saturday morning, I realized that I had a couple of cuts on my knuckles. I don't remember incurring these wounds (no, I didn't black out, my memory is just naturally shit) and it took me a second to think of how they may have happened. Then, it hit me.

Early Friday evening I met up with a couple of guys downtown to watch a bit of the NFL draft. We ended up making a drinking game out of the event: a shot every 16 picks, a shot whenever Green Bay makes a pick (we're all Green Bay fans), and a shot every time a Virginia Tech player gets drafted. This was all on top of the other drinks we had. This was the most I had had to drink since St. Patrick's Day so the rest of the story is a bit hazy. One of the guys mentioned a friend of his who was coming downtown later. We left this place after a while and went to bar number two where we met up with some people who were in town for the weekend. At some point, this friend shows up downtown. I don't know exactly how it happened, but he and I (as we were all leaving after last call) end up making out. In situations like this I tend to be a bit...aggressive (I guess that's the word I'm looking for). We were up against a wall and, like I said, I don't remember scratching or scrapping against anything, but it happened.

This ended up being the talk of work for the next two mornings since I work with one of the guys that I was watching the Draft with.

The part that truly sucks is that I was supposed to see him the next day (a wine festival type of thing here in town), but that didn't happen. :( Too bad, I remember him being cute (I think :P).
