Seriously, it's like everyone seems to be coming out of the closet lately. I'm away from the news for a few days and suddenly everyone is gay. CNN's Don Lemon, Phoenix Suns President Rick Welts (both of whom I wrote a little about on my other blog), and former Villanova player Will Sheridan (2003-2007) have all come out in the last day or two.
I don't mean to make light of all this. These are guys in important positions when it comes to being role models, both in terms of young people who have to deal with being gay, as well as when it comes to young people who may have preconceived notions about what being gay "means." Being gay has many different faces, and not every gay guy is like (for lack of a better example) Jack McFarland. Some of us ARE black and other racial minorities, some of us DO like sports and not just for the eye-candy factor (though there is that too). We aren't all the same and thinking so is kind of gaycist, to steal a word from "Happy Endings." Hopefully these events make a positive difference in someone's life out there and they won't think they are alone.
I'll try to make my next post a bit lighter than this one.
